Spotify Playing It Cool Before Major Announcement

As the song in Annie Get Your Gun goes, Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better, and it seems as if Swedish streaming music giant Spotify is looking to take some of the limelight away from Apple’s iTunes Match and Google Music from the Mountain View behemoth.

With Spotify already available as an iTunes app and for Android, what exactly are they up to? It seems we’ll be finding out at the end of the month as Spotify has issued invitations to a press event to take place in New York on 30th November. Billed as a global press conference by Spotify, the invite says, apparently, that it has some exciting new to be shared.

No hints as yet as to what that news will be but it’s interesting that the build up to this event comes only four months after Spotify’s debut in the US and when a fair number of publishers and labels have been pulling out of streaming services over concerns that record sales are being hit.

It’s also interesting that this comes on the heels of the company’s announcement that it now has 2.5 million paying subscribers, with 500,000 being added in the past couple of months, most likely due to its US roll out. Its partnership with Facebook may also be a factor in the rise and rise of Spotify and it’s also launched in countries like Austria and Denmark recently.

Spotify says it’s going in a new direction and though speculation is fevered, we’ll have to wait to hear what CEO Daniel Ek has to say in the Big Apple.
