Netflix Launches a ‘Just for Kids’ Portal, Makes Playing Outside Passé

This is either the most brilliant idea for parents or one of the worst things to come down the pike for society in general. Netflix has just taken the wraps off their “Just for Kids” portal that makes it supposedly easy for young children to navigate content using familiar TV show and movie characters. The portal also provides a drop-down genre list that kids can further dig through, offering things like girl power, talking animals, superheroes, dinosaurs, princesses, and robots. The VP of product innovation mentions he has a 5 and 7 year old who he had in mind when developing the portal, but I can’t see how a child of 5 or 6 will be able to navigate through the site when it’s only accessible via a Mac or Windows PC. What’s more, children also have to understand how to use the nav. items and be able to read the genres in the drop-down menu, as well as the show pages with the available episodes (screenshot). My guess is that the future iPad version will work most of the kinks out by the time the app launches. But you got wonder… do we really want a generation of kids growing up glued to a screen? There’s a whole world out there. Seize the day!
