Sony’s New Cone-shaped HomeShare Network Speaker Lets You Beam Music to It via DLNA

Last night I was looking for a wireless speaker that lets you beam music to it like the new crop of AirPlay compatible speakers, but with DLNA. I’ve seen demos of this using Windows Media Player’s “Play To” functionality, but haven’t actually seen any DLNA wireless speaker products on the market — Internet radio boomboxes and audio receivers, yes. Well, to my surprise, I discovered that Sony recently launched the $199 DLNA compatible SANS300 HomeShare Network Speaker with 360° audio coverage. It’s a compact unit that easily connects to your network via Ethernet or Wi-Fi and makes itself available as a digital media renderer (DMR) in DLNA terms. It also has the ability to sync up with other Sony HomeShare Network Speakers to create a multiroom audio environment.

The catch, however, is that you can only beam audio to the device with a DLNA compatible app — be it on a mobile device, PC, Blu-ray player, etc. The same limitation applies with AirPlay. However, for my Linux friends (Fedora, SUSE, Ubuntu, etc.), I discovered PulseAudio has a preference setting that allows you to select an AirPlay or DLNA compatible network speaker as an audio output device from your sound settings. In other words, any audio on your computer can be piped to the speaker regardless if the app has DLNA support built-in or not (perfect for beaming Pandora, Last.fm, ShoutCAST, etc.). My guess there are third-party Windows and Mac apps out there that will allow you to do this as well.
