WebM Counters MPEG-LA’s Patent Pool with One of Their Own

Today WebM announced the WebM Community Cross-License (CCL) initiative. In a nutshell, 17 founding members have joined forces to license essential patents related to WebM technologies to other members of the CCL. The end result will be a better royalty-free codec the public and manufactures can use and it will, in theory, create a shield that will better protect WebM from any lawsuits MPEG-LA has planned against the codec, which MPEG-LA claims steals intellectual property found in H.264 (the former defacto HTML5 video codec).

WebM supporting browsers include: Firefox, Opera, Chrome, and Internet Explorer via a component plugin (Safari is obviously a hold out)
