Apple Adds iTunes ‘Home Sharing’ and Expands AirPlay Functionality in iOS 4.3

With all the big news of iPad 2 yesterday it was easy to overlook that Apple also updated iTunes and iOS with some features that our readers will find exciting. It turns out that iTunes now has a Home Sharing feature that allows iOS 4.3 running device owners to tap their computer’s iTunes library over Wi-Fi. Users can now stream movies, music, and even an iTunes mix to their iPad, iPhone or iPod touch from their Mac or PC. In addition, iOS 4.3 has expanded AirPlay functionality to include support for video from third party apps / web sites (a much requested feature), videos from the Photos app, and previews from the iTunes app through your Apple TV. Interesting caveat: “Movie rentals cannot be streamed or transferred using Home Sharing.”
