HP Dropping MediaSmart Server Line Powered by Windows Home Server

Crazy! HP has decided to pull the plug on its Windows Home Server-powered MediaSmart Server line, reports We Got Served. The company, who has been the premier WHS hardware partners since 2007, will continue to support existing models, but will no longer create new products based on the platform. In fact, HP has already moved on to back other storage solutions like Data Robotic’s Drobo (sold through its small business channel) and may even decide later to give its newly acquired WebOS platform NAS functionality sometime in the future. Enthusiasts, Microsoft states, looking to buy next-generation Windows Home Server machines running “Vail” will find them from OEMs like Acer, ASUS, Lenovo, LaCie, and systems builders like Tranquil PC when it’s released. Until then… interested WHS buyers should see some steep discounts this holiday season on HP’s latest (and last) EX490 and EX495 MediaSmart Server models (update: HP’s store is already “out of stock“).
